Satisfied customers since 1986

Karlsruhe, March 5th, 2010 - Heless, located in Germany, has been producing doll's accessories and toys for girls for over 60 years. Today, the family company is successfully managed by Beate Becker. It was she who, as a young boss in 1983, decided to lead the midsize company into the age of electronic data processing. The young businesswoman did not select one of the usual software solutions by one of the large hardware manufacturers like Siemens, IBM or Nixdorf, but gave the newcomer ABAS a chance. A decision she did not regret.

Selecting an independent software vendor

"We had a long ERP selection process. In August 1983 we called for bids in collaboration with a consultant. Previously we had a look at various solutions at CeBIT fair in Germany. At that time, ERP systems as we know them today did not exist. Back then the large hardware providers were also providing the IT solution. Accordingly, we first talked to companies such as Siemens and Olivetti. This dragged on for quite some time. After two years we almost signed with a large provider. However, when we went to sign the contract, we didn't feel like a customer but more like an applicant. Various contractual specifications didn't seem appropriate. We reconsidered our decision. Our consultant then pointed out that it was also possible to buy a software independent of the hardware. This was an entirely different approach. According to my knowledge, there were only two companies in Germany at that time which provided a solution for business planning independent of the hardware: Roth and ABAS.
Back then, Unix was spreading on the German market as an independent operating system. Our consultant saw it as a good sign that we had not signed the contract with the large provider and were now able to buy an independent software. We had sent a kind of requirements specification to ABAS and Roth and on this basis then decided in favour of ABAS."

A time of change: from typewriters to electronic data processing

"In October 1986 we had our first meeting with ABAS, almost three years after our call for bid. The requirements specification was used as basis for our collaboration. We went through it item by item. Almost everything that we needed had to be developed. It was a time of change, the conversion from typewriter to electronic data processing. I had just taken over the company from my mom and as a "young boss" I had to convince many of the long-established employees with my modern approaches, such as IT implementation. One employee even said she wanted to resign if we would start processing data electronically.
After initial contact in the fall of 1986, the first installation was carried out in January of the following year. We created our customer master files and sent first invoices. Even if in the years of developing the program, we sometimes had the impression that we would never reach a point where it would end, we always felt that we were in good hands with ABAS. Our requirements and ideas were integrated into the software. In July 1992, we confirmed a successful implementation. Five and a half years is a long time, according to today's standards, but as I have said before, it was a time of change, the solutions were new and everything had to be developed first."

An inspiring synergy: ABAS and its customers

Heless in Schwetzingen

manager Beate Becker in front

"In the past years, ABAS has grown with its customers and customers have grown with ABAS. I always appreciated this approach. We, the Heless GmbH, compared to ABAS, had a more relaxed growth and were quite successful. ABAS is a part of our company and we have trusted them for over 20 years. I regularly attend the customer forum to get information about innovations. Many features and functions are added every year. IT is an essential part of a company. We don't need most of these features as a small company, but some of the things have provided us with a competitive edge."

No new data migration for over 20 years

"For us it was a huge benefit that we started using ABAS early on. We have an IT environment that we never had to change. I know some companies that had to change their system, some of them even several times. Every time this means a lot of working hours for the employees. We have been working with ABAS since 1986 and never had to migrate our data." (te/jaja)

"What really matters for ERP users"

CeBIT Studio Mittelstand

Hannover, Germany, March 3rd 2010 - CEO Werner Strub explained live on CeBIT 2010: "what really matters for ERP users". ERP solutions are products of trust. Their effectiveness can only be measured after the implementation. Selecting a new ERP system is for many companies an extraordinary procedure. There is no manual for making the right decision. Listening to actual ERP users, is the only aid for companies during the selection process. ERP users expect a long-term and clear release strategy, further development of the software, fulfilling basic needs, fully integrating all functions, transparent implementations methods to ensure "go live" dates, and a long-term ERP Partner.

Quicksearch in ABAS Business Software - Functions

The new abas search engine is based on the open source poject – Apache Lucene.

Apache Lucene is a high-performance, full-featured text search engine library written entirely in Java. It is a technology suitable for nearly any application that requires full-text search, especially cross-platform.

One of the new search engine's functions allows the index of abas data by configuring what could be indexed while the search itself is web based.

The search requires only a few words to provide satisfying results.

  • The results list only contains pages which contain all search words.

  • Word sequences, which have to appear exactly according to this order are parenthesized in quotation marks, e.g. "32 bit Integer".

  • Upper and lower case is ignored in the search.

  • The user can explicitly exclude a word from the search result by placing a minus in front of this word. Example: Integer -"32 bit Integer" provides pages which contain Integer, but not the sequence 32 bit Integer.

  • Placing a tilde ~ at the end of the word is an inaccurate search method. Example: Intigger~ finds integer, but also interner or trigger. For the search inaccuracy the user can specify a number between 0 (inaccurate) and 1 (accurate) behind the tilde. Example: Intigger~0.7 searches more accurately.

  • The placeholders question mark ? for a symbol and asterisk * for multiple symbols can be used if the symbols are not exactly known. However, a sufficient number of real symbols must be specified.

  • Depending on the installation and performance of the system, the asterisk may or may not be used as the first symbol.

  • The search can be restricted to certain fields. The field name is placed before the search term and is separated from it by a colon. Example user:batch.

Similar documents

A document is tested for frequently occurring terms here. A search with these terms will then be executed. The words highlighted in the result demonstrate due to which words found documents are considered similar.

The search itself can be integrated in the abas window and therefore can always be available or it could be set as a seperate internet page. The option to generate a link which would then open the appropriate abas window is one of the useful functions available. The search uses its own index database, so the search speed is greater without causing any negative effect ot the abas database during the search. The opening of new windows as well as the need to define search criteria is not required. The search is being performed simultaneously in the whole abas structure, for example it could be performed in “Customers” and “Parts” The index can be constantly renewed according to your requirements. While searching, it's irelevant whether the searched word is written using capital or small letters.

Quick search in abas Business Software

Search engine expanded by many useful details

Karlsruhe, november 5th, 2009 - New functions optimize search comfort in abas Business Software (ERP, PPC, MRP, eBusiness). Users can now benefit from a a structured or an unstructured full text search and manifold sorting options when wanting to quickly find data. The abas search engine is similar to established Internet search engines and can be used immediately.

Using your time effectively

According to business statistics, most employees spend an average of 30 minutes per day to search for information. A modern ERP system considerably reduces the search duration. This effect can be further increased if the system, such as abas Business Software, includes comfortable search tools.

Full text search in abas ERP

Search for "maier", sorted in ascending order after "archive" and then in descending order after "user"
Quick search in
abas Business Software

Just like well-established Internet search engines it is possible to carry out a full text search in the entire abas ERP system. In doing so it does not matter whether the search is structured or not. Terms are also searched in the entire ERP system. For example: searching for all products containing the word "thread". Results are listed according to relevance. The abas search engine also searches for structured criteria. Thus, users define characteristics which will restrict the search in advance. The "thread" from the unstructured search would then for example only be searched in the main warehouse.

Fuzzy search

The search engine also supports a search if a word has e.g. been misspelled. Despite incorrectly entered data, this so-called fuzzy search also provides results in which the search term occurs in a similar spelling. An advanced search can also be performed in these results and the abas search engine will sort the hits according to individual sorting criteria.

ABAS innovates ERP market with Process oriented Architecture (POA)

4th,August  2009 – ABAS International Software Partners from around the Globe met in a two day workshop in Cologne, Germany to learn about product innovations from ABAS. Focusing on Process Oriented Architecture (POA), ABAS brings unique methods to speed up implementation time, reduce costs, and increases competitive advantages for customers worldwide. Building on existing tools and technology, POA is an intuitive way to present, teach and use abas ERP.

PROCESS ORIENTED ARCHITECTURE MADE BY ABAS

A newly developed series of Workbenches gives abas ERP users the advantage of being able to manage any process from a single screen. This new development revolutionizes the way ERP is implemented and used.

ABAS delivers pre-defined configurable process-based workbenches. From these screens, users can create and manage transactions, utilize process flow and workflow, call external systems, and have access to all necessary information, instead of working with multiple windows or tabs. Key indicators and alerts allow abas users to make quick decisions and to optimize the management of business processes.

“We used POA to train the staff of one of our customers. We focused on key business processes and trained them on single screens. We then did the roll-out with the same documentation and the staff of our customer was not only able to manage the system but also to train the staff of their newly acquired company themselves.” Alan Salton – President ABAS USA – about the success to implement abas ERP using Process Oriented Architecture

CUSTOMIZED WORKBENCHES

Complicated commands, multiple windows and tabs limited the users’ ability with early ERP Systems. Today, with abas ERP, users are able to complete all their tasks within one pre-configured or customized Workbench. Process Oriented Architecture (POA) and the high flexibility of abas ERP meets every industry’s requirements. During implementation, customers pick from a series of processes to define their business model and the deployment of the system is derived from a small set of these process oriented flows to significantly decrease implementation time and cost. Training becomes a simple task, processes are managed through a single and intuitive screen.

CeBIT 2009: ABAS in Hall 5, Stand A18

abas trade fair stand

CeBIT, the most important trade fair for the digital industry, will take place in Hanover from March 3rd to the 8th, 2009. Together with its sales partners, ABAS Software AG will present the newest innovations for abas Business Software (ERP, PPC, MRP, eBusiness) in hall 5 at stand A18. The focus of the presentation will be innovations and improvements in the areas of eBusiness, web portals, PPC, and databases.

abas eBusiness: Comfortable upgrade

With the new version of abas eB, upgrades can now be executed more quickly and easily. Application customizations, such as service processing or Webshop, will remain. Users are therefore always participating in the technological and functional progress of abas eB software.
The programming interface has been expanded to include many new functions and technologies. This ensures that investment security is always guaranteed for abas eB users.

Dashboards for data viewing

abas ERP data can be visualized as a chart and embedded in the abas portalEach and every day, ERP users have to handle a considerable amount of data. The abas Portal supports them by providing new options for data preparation. The goal is to compile data and information that is necessary to achieve one or more goals, to consolidate them in a task-related manner, and to prepare and visualize them. In the abas Portal, so-called dashboards or key figure information systems provide the functions listed above, are easily configurable, and enable decisions to be securely made based on current financial figures. These financial figures are presented in an intuitive display format. In this way, the cockpit chart optimally supports those responsible for the corporate management. The abas Portal provides a web service that makes the corresponding data available. This information can be used and displayed within the portal and also outside of it. Using the programming language Groovy, it is also possible to execute more complex queries. For simple queries, the information will be compiled in a browser-based manner.
The portal now also includes a new option to individually compile an ERP command overview in a portlet.

Improved database performance

The new version of abas Business Software was able to further improve the performance and scalability of the abas individual database. The database scales considerably better with regard to the number of available CPUs (Central Processing Units). Read access is no longer carried out via the database server, but rather is conducted directly by the clients. Firstly, this lightens the load on the database, and secondly, it uses the multiprocessor more efficiently.
The performance of the GarbageCollection has been increased considerably to run more quickly and to be less of a burden on resources. This is because it no longer reads through the entire database, but rather only a segment in which a relevant number of modifying transactions was made. Manually starting the GarbageCollection, which is often necessary because of the large size of databases, is therefore no longer required.

New sales planning/revenue planning

The new abas ERP sales planning/revenue planning application now contributes to the greatest planning security possible. Sales figures for a future time period can be planned flexibly. Whether it’s one year, one month or one week – any time period can be selected. The application is even flexible for data yet to be planned. New data, for example, can therefore be used as a basis for planning, just as can data from similar or already existing products. Both individual items as well as item groups can generally be planned. In addition, certain client groups can be planned specifically with regard to the region or client. The actual values, however, always contradict the target figures. A comparison between the target values and actual values can be conducted quickly and easily. Since the plans are archived, even outdated values can be included. The sales planning/revenue planning can be constructed as a hierarchy. The new function range is connected to all other ranges of abas Business Software such as abas Corridor Controlling, for instance.           Further information on ABAS:

New abas portal version is available.

The last version of abas portal based on last development of Liferay portal is  on-line. This version except content management functionary, which is used for this web site  , there is additional portlets  which allows you to examine abas-ERP databases and infosystems in a web browser. You can build queries and infosystem calls, or you can write Groovy scripts to combine and process data from different abas-ERP clients or other data sources. Results of a query, infosystem or script can be rendered in different representations like HTML, XML, or atom (RSS).

Every configuration (e.g. a query and its representation) is accessible by a web service client through its specific URL. Thus it is possible to process data from abas-ERP in every client capable of dealing with web services, like programming or script languages. An outstanding example for such a client is abas-Portal and its abas-ERP portlets.

By providing a RESTful service all characteristics of a REST based architecture - security, scalability, and usability - allow to connect a client to abas-ERP with minimal effort.
